Leading the charge early this year was 'In Retrospect'. It's blend of haunting vocals and atmospheric music had listeners scrambling to hear it again and again. Following that, their second single 'Your Words' did nothing but cement the sound the four-piece are becoming known for.
Both singles have found themselves on high rotation on Triple J, as well as receiving regular play on commercial radio and independent radio nation-wide. Battleships have also been receiving international attention from the likes of BBC6, Amazing Radio, Q Radio and BFBS Radio in the UK, in addition to picking up adds on many College radio stations and support from Sat Bisla's Passport Approved in the US.
'In Retrospect' and 'Your Words' are both featured on 'To You', as well as five other tracks which do nothing but add more substance to Battleships' already mesmerizing sound. Songs worth mentioning are 'Coming Back To You' and 'As You'd Begun', both of which showcase Battleships' penchant for evocative melodies and intelligent musicianship.
Battleships have recorded, mixed and produced 'To You' themselves, with Don Bartley (Lisa Mitchell, The Vines, Silver Chair) once again adding his expertise to the mastering process.
With such depth to their sound, it's hard to believe that 'To You' is Battleships' debut release. 'To You' is captivating – simultaneously anthemic and intricate.
Battleships' debut mini album 'To You' is due for release on the 9th November 2012 through MGM.
In support of 'To You', Battleships are embarking on a national tour. Having come off the back of a national tour supporting The Paper Kites with Art Of Sleeping, as well as showcasing at BIGSOUND, they are fast building a reputation for their live show. This has been duly noted by both Triple J and Triple J Unearthed, as they were crowned winners of the Homebake competition, whose past recipients include Boy And Bear and The Rubens. Seeing in the new year at Peats Ridge Festival, it shapes to be a big end to an equally big year for Battleships.
